Jaida | Japan & Hawaii

Jaida, a third-generation Filipino American, was born in the United States but has spent most of her life between Japan and Hawaii.

She moved to Japan’s Kanto region in 2018 and bought a Fujifilm. Since then she has grown to love the hobby as both an artistic expression and a profession.

How did you first get into photography?

My Mama! Growing up she ALWAYS took photos. I remember she'd always take us away from whatever activity we were doing to capture the moment. When you're a kid you just want to play, but looking back I wish I took more photos of her too.

I've learned from her that capturing moments and memories are precious.

What subjects or themes do you enjoy photographing and why?

Coffee, film, and people. As a cafe hopping enthusiast I love to bring my film camera to not only explore new shops but also the local area!

As for people, I enjoy shooting portraits with other artists and fellow creatives.

What is the most important lesson you’ve learned through photography?

Memories are temporary, don't be shy to capture everything. Because as time passes and our minds fade, these photos are what can bring us back to these cherished times.

What advice would you give to your younger self when you were starting out in photography?

That gear isn't everything! Camera lens are important for composition and angles, however if you have a vision use what you already have and don't feel the need to 'save up first' before going out to shoot.

To get better is to continue to practice and learn, and if you keep waiting then it'll only hold you back. Also, have fun with it!

How has photography changed your perspective on the world?

You learn so much about the details of what you're shooting. The more you absorb details of the pictures you've captured, the more you tend to appreciate whatever is captured.
